SOUTH AUSTRALIA JOINS NATIONAL BID TO BEAT BRAIN DISEASE

26 August 2004

South Australia today joined the national bid to ensure Australian minds keep up with our bodies into old age with the South Australian Neuroscience Institute (SANI) joining Neurosciences Australia.

Neurosciences Australia internationally markets Australian expertise and discoveries to beat brain disorders and runs the National Neuroscience Facility. The company has successfully brought together leading scientists and technology across the country for a co-ordinated attack on brain diseases such as Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and Multiple Sclerosis.

Neurosciences Australia Chairman, Dr Michael Wooldridge, welcomed South Australia's brains into the effort: "With 75% of Australians suffering from a brain or mind condition in their lifetime, Australia needs to ensure that we can provide our people with the best treatments science can offer."

"Advances in neuroscience offer the most hope for improving the health of Australians in the future and the best way to make those advances is by working together. Bringing SANI on board means a significant jump in our ability to do that," Dr Wooldridge said.

SANI represents the three South Australian Universities - Flinders University, The University of Adelaide, and the University of South Australia, and affiliated hospitals. They will join Neurosciences Victoria Ltd, a leading research consortium based in Melbourne, and a number of other interstate institutions in advancing research into brain and mind disorders through a concerted nation-wide collaborative approach.

Neurosciences Australia is a membership organisation which governs the National Neuroscience Facility (NNF). The NNF was established through the Commonwealth Government's Major National Research Facilities Programme and was launched in August 2003. The NNF provides access to prohibitively expensive technologies and expertise to researchers and pharmaceutical companies, allowing them to progress research from concept phase through to clinical trials at a fraction of the cost of establishing their own, independent, research facilities.
